Expanding the blueberry patch

6-26-2024

I might be getting carried away with this gardening thing!

Now that I have transplanted/replaced some of the plants in my existing garden I see green space everywhere that can be transformed in a blueberry patch!

I had my grandson come over and help me layout a new planting strip. He is a hard worker.

We laid down 16 feet of cardboard, about 3 feet wide. We then grabbed some stones and put them on the corners to help keep it in place. Then we took the mulch we pulled off of the lavender patch and put it on top. The combination of cardboard and mulch should kill the underlying grass in a couple of weeks, then I can till it up and enhance it in anticipation of planting another 3, or, 4, or 5 new bushes.

The cardboard will also attract earth worms, as they like the decomposing material, and that will further enhance the soil.

I am using the “Planting in a new raised bed” soil mixture from my soil test blog.

Should be able to plant new bushes by Fall.

So exciting!
