Lavender

6-8-24.

So I got this crazy idea to try and grow Lavender. I don’t know why, I just thought I would do it. So off to Home Depot again to see what they may have.

They had quite a selection of different plants and different sizes. I probably spent 45 minutes in the lavender section researching them on my phone.

I didn’t really want to buy small plants so that eliminated a lot of them. I ended up going with an English Lavender ‘Blue Spear’ variety, by Smart Planet. This was in a 1 gallon pot.

I had the perfect spot for this garden. On the south side on my garage. It gets 6 ~ 7 hours of direct sun everyday. The soil is light and rocky, not clay. When I had the garage built 20+ years ago we poured the excess CA6 gravel around the base and over time it broke down the soil underneath it. Perfect!

After digging each hole I added some pea gravel to the bottom of the hole as added insurance for drainage. I also left the plants about 1-1/2 inches proud of the dirt line and added more dirt around them to create a mound to aid in runoff. I then topped the mound with more pea gravel to provide for drainage and not retain any water close to the plant.

After the plants were in the ground I added a weed barrier. I used paper yard waste bags. This will help prevent any weeds and grass from come up.

Well weed barrier was a mistake! Lavender does not need, or like, weed barriers. They hold too much water and lavender do not like to have wet feet. I almost killed them off by doing this.

So I pulled off the barrier, let the ground dry and the plants came back to life. Now I can just sit back and enjoy my Lavender garden.
